OpenAI Just Launched a Codex Desktop App. Is Anyone Actually Switching?

OpenAI dropped a Mac app for Codex today. It's their shot at Claude Code and Cursor.

The pitch is simple: manage multiple AI coding agents from one place, organize them by project, run tasks in parallel. You can add "Skills" (basically instruction folders) and schedule automations.

If you've used Claude Code, this sounds familiar.

What's Actually New

• •Doubled rate limits for Plus, Pro, and Enterprise users
• •Temporarily free for ChatGPT Free users

Where This Fits

The AI coding space has gotten crowded fast. A year ago, GitHub Copilot was basically the only game in town. Now you've got Cursor building a full IDE around AI, Claude Code giving you an agent that can work across your entire codebase, and a dozen other tools fighting for developer attention.

Codex is OpenAI's answer to all of it. They're not just offering autocomplete anymore. They want to be the platform you manage your AI coding agents from. The desktop app, the parallel task management, the scheduled automations. It's a play for the whole workflow, not just the code suggestions.

Whether developers actually want another app in their stack is the real question.

Here's My Take

I've been building with Claude Code for months. It runs my entire workflow. Daily briefs, content analysis, task management, all of it. The system is dialed.

So am I switching? Not yet.

The model matters more than the app. Claude's reasoning on complex coding tasks still feels sharper. OpenAI is basically admitting they're behind by doubling rate limits to compete on value.

But competition is good. If this pushes Anthropic to ship faster, we all win.

The Real Question

How long until "vibe coding" isn't a joke anymore? How long until this is just how software gets built?

We're closer than most people realize.

Either way, it's a good time to be building with AI. The tools are only getting better.
