Movie Review: The Social Network

When someone makes a movie about the most influential website of a generation, everyone in that generation is has to at least go watch it. Right? Well, not so fast. It did make it to #1 at the box office this weekend, but with only 23 million dollars. I say only because, it was projected to be a much higher opening weekend. I think people were thinking 2 things – there will be so many people watching it i’ll go see it next weekend, or really, a movie about facebook?

I donated my $7 to that 23 million, and don’t regret it one bit.

The movie has a much different feel then I expected. The entire movie is basically a flashback. As seen in the trailer Mark Zuckerberg (facebook founder) is being sued by “friends” claiming that he stole their idea for facebook and they want to be paid for it. Throughout the entire film you see all the events that lead them to the point of the lawsuit and everything in between. I am not going to go into too much detail because I don’t want to ruin the movie for you, but the movie brings up a deep controversy, did or did he not “steal” facebook.

What I’m about to say isn’t directly said in the movie, but it will be a thought that you will have after watching it. Did Mark Z “steal” facebook? The answer is no. Now, I’ll get a lot of push back from people by saying that, but legally he did not steal anything. See, during the .com boom and to this day a idea is a idea. Now – was this right? That’s where ethics comes into play. The movie shows just how many unethical moves that Mark has made to get facebook to the point it is today. The thing that Mark had that none of the other people that either got left behind, or completely screwed had, is knowledge. Mark knew how to write the code, Mark believed in his vision, and he knew exactly where he wanted it to go. For lack of a better term, he was smoking what he was selling. Ethically everything wasn’t right but anyone that’s ever worked for a corporation knows this story oh so well.

What I love about this story and something we can all take away from it is, it all starts with a idea. If you don’t dream or have a vision for your life, you’re always going to be sitting back and singing the coulda shoulda woulda’s. Don’t do that. Get in there and fight for what you believe in, no matter what it is. You might not end up running a 25 billion dollar company and worth 6.9 billion dollars. (most of us never will) But you will have a drive inside of you, that each day will cause you to do things you never thought you could.

I didn’t mean for this review to turn into a motivational talk, but hey sometimes things happen.

So …… What’s going to be the facebook of your life?

Movie Review: The Expendables

When you see a cast consists of, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, and even a Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo, you expect this to be a action packed mans kind of movie. You are exactly correct.

Plot? Who needs a plot? That is exactly what the directors must have been thinking when they wrote this film. Instead, blow up enough stuff to completely make up for the lack of storyline.

Labeled as some of the best Mercenaries for hire, this group of rebels are commissioned to go into a small island country and overthrow a dictator. Armed with loads of ammo and their very own plane, they take on this challenge. As expected, there has to be a woman in the mix somewhere, and this story is no different.

From large explosions, decent fight scenes, and the occasional laugh this was a overall great film.

One thing I did notice is that many of the fight scenes are very dark. I feel like they did this so they could use stunt men, in hopes of you not realizing it. I could be completely wrong, but that was just my take. There is also another scene where Stallone is running down a lake dock, let’s just say his running ability has declined.

One of the best, yet overshadowed scenes of the movie is the cameo of Schwarzenegger. The dialong between Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and Willis is priceless.

This would definitely be a movie to get a baby sitter for, leave the kids at home. Full of explosions, guns, fights, and blood this action packed thriller keeps you entertained and excited to entire way though. I completely enjoyed it and do not regret spending my $10 to see this movie.

Have you seen it? What were your thoughts?

Here is the trailer if you haven’t got to see it yet.
